All driving instructors belong to a governing body known as the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). To become a driving instructor you need to pass a number of test and show high level of ability in your own driving and also high standard of teaching ability.

All new applicants will be criminal checked before they are registered on the DSA database.

About ADI Training

There are three parts to becoming a fully qualified driving instructor:

  • Part 1 - Computer-based theory test

    This consists of theory questions, there are 100 all ranging from different aspect of safe and legal driving. The pass mark is 85% and you will not be able to proceed to the next stage until you have passed the theory. Alongside the theory there is also a hazard perception test. This test calls for the candidate to identify hazard early in their development, this is very important in every day lives but even more important for driving instructors who are teaching new inexperience driver. Question and answers will be provided to help you revise and prepare for the theory exams and CDs will be provided for the hazard perception test.
  • Part 2 - Practical test of driving ability

    This consist of you ability to drive a very high standard dealing, You will have to demonstrate a basic knowledge of vehicle safety checks. Your driving ability will have to be of exceptional standard and will have to show very good eyesight test with or without glass.
  • Part 3 - Practical test of teaching ability

    This part of the exam will be assessed on your ability to instruct. Being a great and safe driver is of no use as an instructor if you cannot communicate well with your pupils. You have to learn to adapt your learning style to the needs of each individual and teach them at a pace that is appropriate to their level and knowledge.

Once you have passed part 1 and part 2 successfully you will have a choice to go on a trainee license allowing you to teach students to gain experience for your final qualifying exam.

Once qualified you will be given a job with the school. However, if you do not wish to work with the school you will have the ability to leave and join another school or even start up on your own.

If you choose to work for the school you will be provided a car with dual controls and will be expected to pay franchise for the car and students provided. You will be self-employed and this will allow you to choose the hours you want to work.

ADI Course Fees

Part 1 - Theory and hazard perception test, mainly classroom and home study, material will be provided - £600.

Part 2 - Ability to drive test, 30 hours of on road training will be provided - £900.

Part 3 - Ability to instruct, 40 hours of part 3 training will be provided - £1000.

If your able to pay in for all three parts together a discount of £200 will be given and a total payment will of £2300 will be for the course.

One attempt at each examination is included in your Programme cost, however, should you require a further attempt:

Part 1 - £50
Part 2 - £82
Part 3 - £82

If you require anymore training on-top of the hours stated above

Part 2 - £25 per hour (min of 2 hours)
Part 3 - £25 per hour (min of 2 hours)

Cost of the licence

The of the licence is payable to the DSA as follows:

Trainee licence (valid for six month) - £125
Advance Driving Instructor (ADI) licence (valid for 4 years) - £200
